Guernsey is undergoing a fundamental and very negative change in its voting population demographic.
Per capita, we have fewer adults working productively than ever before.
Welfare recipients, Government employees and Senior Citizens are the new majority.
Unfortunately, rather than growing economic GDP, this majority relies upon a shrinking base of producers for their sustenance.
This is no accident, but rather the result of decades of political ‘slight of hand’ which has left our economic cupboard bare.
Successful politicians know what voters want to hear and that giving into their demands is a time tested path to re-election. Failure to do so can be a one way ticket to the ‘political death house’.
‘Inflation’ is the preferred tool to fool voters into believing the ‘Free Lunch’ they demand is actually possible. However, the old saying: ‘That which cannot be sustained, will not be sustained’ still applies.
While spending beyond our means leads to inflation and inflation leads to economic hardship, the fact is, the time lag between the crime and the punishment can be substantial… allowing the present generation to transfer the pain of overspending to future generations. Extend and pretend is the ‘name of this game’.
A century ago you either produced or you went hungry.
Today, it’s possible to pop out kid after kid, receive free rent, food, soft drinks, medical/dental care and a host of other free services, all while never working a day in your life. ‘Snap’ and ‘EBT’ have become an essential staple for Guernsey food stores. They simply couldn’t survive without these financial handouts from taxpayers.
Education
The saying ‘those who can… Do and those who can’t… Teach’ held sway for almost 200 years.
Yes, teacher salaries were low and benefits sparse, but considering the long summer and holiday vacation periods along with the ease of educating young minds willing to believe just about anything, there was no shortage of ‘teachers’.
Today, teaching has been elevated to a ‘Profession’ by the ‘Tribe’, requiring certifications up the ying-yang. Salary, benefit and retirement packages are through the roof, while our children graduate more ignorant and unprepared for life than ever.
Government Work
The phrase ‘it’s good enough for government work’ is universally understood. If you’ve got the connections to get on with the government, you pretty much have it made in the shade.
Our small town and school district have enough government employees for a population three times its size.
BNSF, Union Pacific and others continue downsizing staff as technological advances allow fewer individuals to perform available work.
Why does the government always blame its shortcomings on being ‘understaffed and underfunded?’
‘Handicapped’ has become an abused condition.
No one is arguing against lending a helping hand to those in need, but there are plenty with handicapped license plates, who (along with pets) have no trouble walking into, shopping and exiting stores without any apparent difficulty. It is however a bonus to be able to park up front ahead of everyone else.
‘Disabled’ can be another boondoggle. Individuals join the Armed Forces for various reasons, often having nothing to do with serving our nation’s perceived defence.
Some receive Sex Change surgery/therapy and then apply for early discharge with Full Disability. Similar examples exist in education and other government agencies.

Why do government employees qualify for ‘early retirement’ that then allows them to double dip into law enforcement and other positions which have their own set of continuing ed and certifications?
Government has basically become a ‘good old boys club’.
Bottom Line: Voters continue voting in Council members and Mayor that promote and foster this negative demographic trend, threatening our Town’s very future.
Is raising utility rates, fees, surcharges, dues and taxes the best solution?
There can be Producers without Takers, but there can be no Takers without Producers. Let’s think before killing the goose that lays the Golden Egg!
